I’m 67 years old and just took up the trumpet (I have played flute for 45 years) four months ago.
Turns out you can teach an old dog new tricks - with the help of the right instructor. Catherine
has been a godsend to me. While being an accomplished trumpeter in her own right she is ever
patient and kind in helping new players learn this instrument. And she wants to help her students
learn proper technique without being pedantic. I would probably have given up the attempt but
for her encouragement to persevere. She’s always telling me I can make it when I reach the next
rough spot and get discouraged. Her gentle corrections to my bad playing habits have kept me
on track and improving. When she asked me what goals I had in mind I said I want to sound like
Chris Botti. Without missing a beat she just smiled and said, “Let’s do it.”

I got the opportunity to take lessons through Catherine Martinez the first semester of my freshman collegiate career. During my lessons, she was extremely easy to work with and helped me change the way I approached certain methods. Within weeks, I could notice a huge improvement in my trumpet playing. Even though I only took from her for a semester, I believe that she’s set me up for success for the rest of my college career.

As a COVID precaution, our son’s middle school made the decision to divide middle-school band into separate semester-long activities, with half the kids participating in the Fall Semester and half in the Spring Semester. Needless to say, this caused us significant concern that our middle-schooler’s trumpet skills would diminish during the off-semester (and summer) and relatedly that he would lose interest in band, altogether. As a matter of blind luck – or perhaps divine intervention – we found the most wonderful online instructor in Catherine, who has provided age/skill-appropriate lessons to our son during his off-semester, such that he is flourishing now that he is back in the school program. We are continuing with these lessons even now that he is back in school, as she continues to help him with both school and additional pieces. We appreciate her teaching music theory and scales that he would not otherwise learn in school, but mostly we appreciate her ability to instill in our son a love for the trumpet, and a desire to keep improving, to a degree we simply did not expect. She is kind, supportive and inspirational. She is conscientious to the needs of the student and has a wonderful demeanor which brings out the best in them. She has our highest recommendation!
